The Denver Broncos were founded in 1960 as an American Football League charter franchise. Frank Tripucka (quarterback on the team from 1960-1963) and Floyd Little (running back on the team from 1967-1975) were important players in the team's early years and both of their jersey numbers are retired: #18 and #44.

The Denver Broncos are in the American Football Conference West Division (which the Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, and San Diego Chargers also are in). Under Mike Shanahan (head coach from 1995 to 2008) they won Super Bowl XXXII (1997 season) against the Green Bay Packers 31-24 and XXXIII (1998 season) against the Atlanta Falcons 34-19. The MVPs in the Super Bowls were RB Terrell Davis from Georgia who played for the Broncos from 1995-2002 and QB John Elway from Stanford who played for the Broncos from 1983-1998. John Elway's jersey number #7 has been retired by the Denver Broncos.

They won the AFC Championship in the 1977 season under Red Miller (head coach from 1977-1980), quarterback Craig Morton (1977-1982), and the Orange Crush Defense (led by linebackers Randy Gradishar 1974-1983 and Tom Jackson 1973-1986). They finished the season 12-2 but lost to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XII in a score of 27-10.

Under Dan Reeves (head coach from 1981-1992) and quarterback John Elway they reached Super Bowls XXI (1986), XXII (1987), and XXIV (1989) and lost against the New York Giants 20-39, the Washington Redskins 42-10, and the San Francisco 49ers 55-10.
